When a Scion not a Scion? Since Scion division of Toyota, this is both a trap and serious issue.
Scions can be something twisted and Toyota Toyota in overseas markets for the cars built by other manufacturers Scion. The first product was the Scion FR-S developed in collaboration / Subaru BRZ / Toyota 86. The second is that Scion iA Mazda Mazda designed and built.
Exterior
Mazda and Toyota has partnered with all kinds some time, and iA is the first fruit. If you do not know now, the 2016 Mazda2 hatch tasty Looking not just the United States, despite the Mazda plan to sell in Canada and Puerto Rico. To meet the love of shopper for subcompact Zoom-Zoom, Mazda Scion had 2 turn in the sedan Scion iA for the American sedan and Toyota Yaris for Canada. As happens with the Ford Fiesta, the conversion hatch sedan adds about a foot total length. To help differentiate the iA of any future sale Mazda2 in the US, the front end gets a huge trapezoidal grille front and a few "Angry Birds" projectors. At the re ar, the rear of the Scion less disguised with a strong influence in Mazda taillights blended with a hint of Camry.
I know Ill take the heat for this, but I actually like the looks of iA in person. I think the side profile and rear are better balanced than the sedan Ford Fiesta, although the grid of the Fiesta is prettier. The overall design seems more intentional and - dare I say -. Emotional than the Nissan Versa or Chevy Sonic
Interior
iA Hop inside and it is pure Mazda, which is a good thing. In terms of style and quality parts, Mazda Scion essentially a scale of 0% within Mazda3 with some modifications. We get the same chunky steering wheel loaded with buttons, even single dashboard dial and infotainment screen of 7 inches. Also cribbed the Mazda parts bin is the keyless-go system standard, a single zone manual climate control and standard cruise control.
For such a small car that iA front seats proved surprisingly spacious. Scion claims 41.9 inches of legroom in the front, which is more than you get in the Corolla and Focus, and a still respectable 34.4 inches in the rear. Although taller drivers will probably bash their elbows on the B-pillar, they will agree. Cargo space comes at a generous 13.5 cubic feet to beat the bigger C orolla by a hair.
Infotainment
Mazda calls the infotainment MazdaConnect software. Scion has not named specifically, but the system is exactly the same. What sets the iA outside is not so much the software and first-class infotainment interface, but the system is standard. Like someone grafted iPa d dash [ I think this is more like an Android tablet cheap Walmart an iPad, but to each their own. -Mark ], the 7-inch color LCD touch screen is the heart of the system. In the center console, we have an iDrive / MMI as control knob and panel buttons. Like the Infiniti systems, you can navigate with either the controller or the touchscreen, or both depending on what is easiest for the moment. As long as youre parked. Over 5 MPH functionality of the touch screen is locked only for voice and button inputs.
Smartphone application integration for streaming media is standard and customers can add navigation software on the screen for an undisclosed price after you buy the car. The high resolution graphics, an intuitive interface and comprehensive voice commands to your media library create a system that rivals uConnect and iDrive for the best in the industry. The only danger with making the system standard in the iA is that it makes other Scions seem decidedly behind th e times.
Training
Logically, there is a Mazda 1.5L beating four-cylinder engine under the hood of iA. Good for 106 horsepower and 103 lb-ft of torque, the engine uses fuel-sipping technology of Ma zda, including direct injection, a 12-Up: 1 compression ratio and a Mazda 6 speed automatic transmission with a gear final high and an aggressive pair of bridging program. For purists of the crowd, you can get your iA with a short range manual transmission, but you will get better 2 MPG (combined 37 MPG, 42 highway) with the 6-speed automatic.
player
In an unexpected twist, all iA models come with a low speed collision mitigation and warning system standard. The system is similar in design to the first generation of the Volvo City Safety system uses a laser scanner mounted in front of the mirror to monitor traffic. At speeds of between about 5 and 18 mph, the system will first warn the driver of an impending collision, the brakes preload and ultimately reduces engine power and brakes autonomously to avoid or mitigate the collision. Scion officials said the system is not programmed to detect pedestrians or cyclists as the last system of Volvo, but it "can answer" to this type of obstacle depending on the situation.
Since my time was limited with the iA, I could not put it in my usual battery of tests. You should expect the acceleration time to be quiet, probably in the 10 second slot occupied by the Prius C. The best acceleration times will be with the 6-speed automatic 6-speed manual but will make the seconds faster strung because it is simply more fun. I spent most of my time in a manual 6-speed version and although I did long for more power, short throws and excellent clutch distract me, mostly.
For Scion, management is pure perfectio n. For Mazda, Im always sad iA has electric power steering. Validate is clear that one can expect from a car riding on 185 / 60R16 and the steering ratio is just perfect. People had Mazda Scion iA adjust to the softer side of the segment that causes more body roll than I anticipated, but otherwise, it has not reduced too much on the winding mountain roads of our test road fun. overall grip is weaker than I expected with great agitation from tires if you enter a corner too hot. I blame both the size of the tires and the rubber compound for this, but the tires can be easily exchanged. Although we have a torsion beam rear suspension, the iA was remarkably well in the corners with broken pavement.
The most compelling thing about iA is the combination of Mazda engineering and Scion pricing. For 2015 the MSRP starts at $ 15.700 with the manual 6-speed and ends at $ 16,800 for the iA with the 6-speed automatic transmission. Because of the way the Scion pricing system works, the ma nual transmission model has a high level of content that often prevents a manual transmission in the competition as the LCD infotainment 7-inch system, pre-collision braking system, keyless-go and backup camera. Scion also launching a maintenance plan scheduled 2 years / 25,000 miles. When comparing the iA the rest of the segment, the high level of standard equipment iA manages to make the best deal subcompact around. When pitted against Nissan Versa, the leader in value in the segment, the Scion manages to be $ 1,500 less when comparable equipment.
The iA is not the Scion I expected, and it is not the Mazda I hoped to be. IA seems that the interpretation of what a Mazda Scion should be, and the marriage has created a surprisingly good little car. Shoppers will find a well-controlled ride, excellent road manners and impeccable fuel economy while wrapped in the Scion warranty and scheduled maintenance, and sold at a Toyota dealership. The combination makes for the most attractive sedan in this segment by a hair. (If Ford comrades automatic transmission to their 3-cylinder turbo Fiesta, its game on.) The combination should also be a lesson for Mazda, because philosophy and mono-spec Scion pricing pragmatists give a reason to buy the best engine in this sedan segment ..
