Range Rover Evoque prices UK vs Malaysia

Recently met an old friend after 18 long years. We were university mates and both of us ended up in the UK in quite different occupations. However, despite being only about 100 miles apart we were unable to meet up because of something or the other.

It was quite ironic that we finally met up in Malaysia, around 9000 miles away from the UK. Anyway, we got to talking about cars like car lovers usually do and the cars we drive. My friend recently bought the Ranger Rover Evoque, which coincidentally also happens to be my dream car.

We were dis cussing car prices and how the Evoque is quite out of my league with prices starting at RM413,888 (without insurance).  Source: Paul Tan.

My friend was visibly shocked as the cost in the UK was around £30K (OTR). Thats considered quite a handsome even for a luxury brand. However, it translates to about RM180K at the current exchange rates, which means that we are paying more than double the price of the Evoque here in Malaysia as compared to the UK. 

With that amount, I can buy a 2-sty Terrace/Link House 3 bedroom house near my office in Semenyih, Selangor. So literally the Ranger Rover Evoque is a house on wheels.

Self etching Primer

When doing major or even minor work on older cars your going to run into rust. The steel that is your car wants to turn itself back into the puffy red iron oxide that it was when it was mined. Whether you’re sanding, sand blasting or chemical striping to get rid of the paint and getting down to the metal the first thing you need to apply to the steel is self etching primer.

Self-etching primer is composed of an acid and zinc. The acid, usually phosphoric acid, forces the zinc down into the top couple of molecules of the steel. Chemically impregnating the steel like this cannot reverse the rust but it can stop in from getting worse. So it’s important that you get all of the scaly rust off.

Wipe the surface with wax and grease remover to get it clean enough so nothing interferes i.e. fingerprints. The self-etching primer is usually gray or olive drab gray but the color is just there to show you where you’ve put it on and it is very thin and one thin coat is enough. Putting more of the primer won’t make it work better. You can apply it over paint or bondo but it is only effective on bare metal. You can apply your high build primer or body filler over the self-etching primer but be careful it is not a finished product by it self.

In other words you can’t apply it and then push the car back outside, it has to have a sealed surface over it, water will reverse the reaction and will pull the zinc back out.

Self-etching primer comes as two parts or ready to spray and also comes in aerosol.

I use it when ever I see bare metal or if I’m putting one metal against another. For instance steel screws in aluminum or on welds.

Rolls Royce launches Wraith coupe in India at Rs 4 6 crore

Rolls Royce, a brand which is quite famous amongst the Maharajas of India has launched its seventh product in the Indian market, the all new Wraith which is the fastest and also the most dynamic model the company has ever built.

The car is priced at Rs. 4.6 crores, ex-showroom Delhi (which is usually the base price and you end up paying even more crores in customizing the car to suit your needs)

At an event which also marks the fifth anniversary of its showroom in Delhi, the Wraith does push the brand in a new dimension. The Wraith is a car for the curious, the confident and the bold. The coupe is based on the Ghost platform and is powered by a 6.6 litre, twin turbo-charged V12 engine which delivers 624 bhp with 800 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds.  The company claims the Wraith to be most powerful Rolls-Royce in history. The engine is mated to a 8-speed ZF transmission which is also found in other BMW cars.

< br />In terms of dimensions the car has a shorter wheelbase than the Ghost by 130mm, shorter by 183mm, is 43 mm lower and has a 40mm wider track. The car will compete with the likes of Bentley Continental GT.

Rolls Royce plans to add two new dealerships at Chandigarh and Ahmedabad. The company currently has three dealerships: Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad.

Rolls Royce also announced an all India city tour where the Wraith will be showcased starting from Delhi.

WHEELS WAVES 2015 PUNKS PEAK

The competitors parade...

Heres an important way Wheels+Waves is different from most other motorcycle shows; it includes two days of riding through the exceptional Basque countryside, and an impromptu street race - the Punks Peak hillclimb.  While this race started out quasi-legally on a lonely hillside farm track back in 2013, it developed into a sanctioned event the next year, complete with police assistance and an ambulance in case of trouble.  For better or worse, the competition, while still very much in the spirit of fun (theres nothing to win but glory), has heated up over the years, and the run whatya brung entrants are being overshadowed by purpose-built drag bikes, and very hot street racers come to show what theyve got cooking.

Mark Upham - owner of Brough Superior - rode Sam Lovegroves Royal Enfield special over the weekend, which he says changed his life. Ive spent the last 11 years building up motorcycle businesses, and never riding for pleasure.  This was so much fun, Ive decided to cede some control of the business, so I can ride and enjoy life more.  Amen to that, my friend.

The ride from Biarritz to Jaizkibel mountain takes about 45 minutes, with roads winding mostly along the Cote Basque, Corniche, and through several villages on the way to Hondarribia in Spain, the last town before climbing into the mountains.  This year many thousands of bikers made their way up the mountain, and surprisingly the ride didnt feel like a clump, possibly because so many people get temporarily lost en route!  The view at the top of the ridge is commanding, taking in the whole of Frances coastline as it merges into Spain, and the lovely city of San Sebastian just beyond. There are wild horses and fenced-in sheep wandering the expansive meadows, which shortly resonate to the sounds of throttles held wide.  Competitors are flagged off two by two in rounds of elimination, paired roughly by capacity.

It was widely expected that the days highlight matchup would be the Lucky Cat Garage dustbin-faired Sprintbeemer, which won last year, vs the Swiss Young Guns Garage sprint Moto Guzzi, which had just been completed and certainly looked formidable.  As the races proceeded, a wild card was thrown in the mix, as the Revival Cycles Hardley, with its 100+hp tuned engine, was as fast as anything else on the road, and better suited to the twisty hillclimb than the drag-slick clad sprinters.  When final ly paired against the Young Guns Guzzi, determined Texan Alan Stulberg pipped the Swiss machine at the line, and the final was to be Seb Lorentz vs. Stulberg.  The Revival founder surprised - shocked? - the assembled thousands with his hairy starting/riding style, his first off accompanied by the days most vertical wheelie.    Still, Sebs much-developed BMW racer took the flag at the end, although as usual the Revival gang caught everyones attention - as a factory effort, they must have felt vindicated in flying a couple of bikes to France!
